DLA stopped early was created by sweetpea
I've just realised that I had my assessment on 19th April but my benefit was stopped from the 26th February. Can the dwp do this?

It's very unusual for a date other than the one on which the Decision is made to be used but it does lie within the Decision Makers purview.
Does the date fit with an event during your reassessment like the assessment or when you returned your form?

When I rang to start the transfer process from DLA to PIP, I was told that even if it was decided I was not entitled to PIP, I would get a further month's DLA from when the decision is made? So now I am panicking was I given duff information?

We don't know what has happened with Sweetpea's claim.
The Transfer legislation requires an additional four weeks of DLA to be paid once the Decision on the PIP claim has been made.
