How is Oxygen viewed by PIP? was created by Paul PIP
Hi

Can anyone tell me how oxygen is viewed by PIP?
Medicine, treatment or an aid?
Is it different for home of ambulatory oxygen?

Thanks

Paul

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

You haven't provided any context so it is difficult to provide an answer but I would assume it will be treated as a medication unless it is required in circumstances similar to what used to be referred to as an "iron lung" where it should be possible to argue it is a treatment.

Hi
In particular how it applies to question 14a How far can you walk taking into account any aids you use? and 14b Do you need to use an aid or appliance to walk?

My wife has permanent damage to her lungs and is prescribed home and ambulatory oxygen.
Obviously the answer to the question is different with her oxygen on or not.
So trying to understand the correct way to answer?

Hope that makes sense? and thanks for your help.

It would likely be considered an aid, however, this will only be relevant to Descriptor 14(d) as all of the other Descriptors for Moving Around have the phrase "aided or unaided".

If the tick boxes restrict your answering then mark them "see below/attached" and answer in the comments box or attached pages.

Thank you.

Think I'm getting my head around it, just :)

There are over questions where I think oxygen use will count as an aid, such as getting dressed so I'll describe as best I can.

Maybe you can help with this one:
Q3a Preparing food - do you use an aid or appliance:
She would need to use oxygen, however we were advised that oxygen should not be used in the kitchen as the risk of fire is to great. Therefore she does not cook.

Sound plausible? Come across before?

Kind regards

Paul

Certainly, she would not be expected to cook on a hob if she needs the oxygen in the kitchen but she could still prepare the food and the cooking could be done in a microwave, so if these would still present problems then you need to explain why.
