We appealed against DWP decision to move my son from support group to WR group. He scored 15 points so only just scraped into the WR group. Mandatory reconsideration was not successful, so we had to appeal. Whilst waiting for a tribunal date, we have now received a letter from DWP saying they have reconsidered and have moved my son back to the support group. Of course, I am very relieved that it has been satisfactorily resolved, but we only received a covering letter which did not specify what points were awarded and in what areas. Should I request this information?

Congratulations on the revised award.
An SG award is not points based your son will have met one or more specific Descriptors to have been placed in the group,
How he qualified may be documented in the assessment report, you can request this from the DWP office dealing with his claim, it will be an ESA85 if he had a face to face assessment or an ESA85A if he did not.
If it is not specifically indicated then my guess is that it will be one of the activities that he scored for.
