Hi I went to my first UC appointment today, I said I thought I should be applying for contribution ESA as I have been retired from work due to ill health. The man said no I could only apply for UC is this correct

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is

No, it is not correct you can make a claim for New Style ESA which is the equivalent of a legacy claim for ESA(CB). The NS ESA will be deducted from your UC so there is no financial benefit unless you have deductions from your UC.

Will I get deductions from my UC of a small monthly private pension I receive. If so would it be better to put a contribution based ESA claim in

Yes, the pension will be deducted but I can't say whether you would be better off under NS ESA as this will also have deductions if your pension is more than £85/week.
