Dear Gordon
I am worrying about applying for a Blue Badge (I get PIP enhanced mobility for both moving around & psychological distress). I don't have a car myself but it might help getting to & from appointments & most importantly keeping my access clear.

I am frightened to do this due to fears the Council will pass my details to the DWP. I don't trust DWP to take into account 'reliably' & 'majority of the time'. If someone I know can pick me up once a fortnight to travel a short distance for an afternoon appointment,( which leaves me exhausted & distressed for 3 days) I don't think this contradicts my award???

Having already endured 1 malicious complaint from neighbours I also feel frightened about sticking my head above the parapet & being seen using a Blue Badge or disabled space. I don't use a wheelchair.

Age UK says the Council isn't allowed to share your data under the new Data Protection rules brought in last year, but I get the impression DWP can do whatever they like. I would also have to use my driving licence as ID (My passport is way out of date), although I no longer drive due to my disability.

Am I right to be worried or is it just paranoia?
Thank you

Whilst I fully understand your concerns you may be overthinking this :)

The decision to award a Blue Badge lies wholly with your Local Authority, there is no need for them to speak to the DWP about it and as Age UK has said there are legal restrictions on who they can share the information with.

Also, your PIP award entitles you to automatic qualification for a Blue Badge so there had to have been an expectation by the DWP that you might apply for one.

Finally, your having or not having a Blue Badge is not something that is considered as part of the PIP assessment process.

So, if you think that a Badge will assist you on the few occasions that you go out then apply for one.

Thank you Gordon.
As you say excessive rumination on my part! The news about robot profiling & police tactics has filled me with dread.
Hope you are keeping as well as you can manage. Thanks for all your hard work.
