DLA To PIP Assessment Worries was created by ElLoco
I’m currently being switched from DLA to PIP. My support person asked for the home assessment to be rearranged due to being unavailable on that date. Whilst waiting for a new date my mother was involved in a serious road accident that almost killed her, needless to say I’m totally devastated. My support telephoned IAS to explain what had happened and ask if they could put a hold on the process for a few months, the answer was NO. My doctor even wrote to them and asked for a postponement of a few months, I received a telephone call from IAS, a rude and unsympathetic person telling me that the doctor’s letter didn’t matter and I was only allowed one rearrangement and that was that, I got so upset I put the phone down on her.

I have since spoken to the CAB. They called the DWP on my behalf, the DWP said they would have to wait to get the file back from IAS before they could make any decision and, that we should contact IAS again. This was done and my file will be sent to DWP. My mental state just can’t cope with any more stress at the moment. I’m wondering what the likely outcome will be, will DWP close my claim or will they take current circumstances into consideration and send my file back to IAS for a new assessment? Will they stop my benefit while they make a decision? CAB said they will help if I need to appeal.

You may get a sympathetic Decision Maker but I think the most likely outcome will be that your PIP claim will be closed and a consequence your DLA one as well, even if they do accept your reasons then your file will be sent back to IAS and they will want to arrange a new appointment.

Have you tried to get a Paper Based Review? You will need the support of your GP to provide any additional medical testimony to allow this to happen.

I don't mind having the assessment, I just need some time to come to terms with what's happened to my mother.

Can you please give me more information on Paper Based Review, and is it not too late for that if my file has already been sent back to DWP?

If your file has been returned to the DWP then it is too late for a PBR to be done.

A PBR is done on the papers that the Assessment Provider has plus any information that they can source themselves, for example; from your GP.

For a PBR to be done the AP (ISA) must have sufficient information for them to make a recommendation to the DWP (assessment report).

Thank you Gordon.
If they close my PIP claim and end my DLA can I appeal?

Yes, you would need to do a Mandatory Reconsideration first and then an appeal if necessary.
