How do people survive this?

How do people survive this? was created by Thistlelass
I have just got the initial copy of my PIP home visit report back. No points from standard care. Lots of inaccuracies, the usual. Now I know how to go about challenging this. I have a severe mental health illness and MS is finally being diagnosed after a 20 year wait. I feel like I am going to go under here, financially and that mentally everything is just going to collapse. How do others survive this difficult time please?

Hi Thistleass

The first stage to challenging a Decision is for you to request a Mandatory Reconsideration, this needs to be done in writing to the DWP, within one month of the Decision, to the office that dealt with your claim, have a look at our PIP MR & Appeal guide for details of the process, the PIP area also has template letters that you can use to make the request with.

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

Your primary task is to show that you meet the criteria, there are many reasons you may have failed, you need to address each of these but don't get bogged down in criticising the assessment report unless you can clearly show that it is incorrect, it is a lot easier to argue the facts of the situation;

"the assessor recorded that I walked 50m, I did but they have failed to document that I had to stop every 10m for a rest due to breathlessness"

than their opinions

"based on my observations of the claimant walking I believe that they can reliably walk more than 200m.

When you have a better idea of the issues with your claim, come back to the forum and we will do our best to help.

Are you getting any support from your local crisis team or community mental health team? In terms of financial support then people like CAB or Shelter are some of the people who can offer support as appropriate.

Hi Thistleass. Just wanted to reassure you that you are not alone in feeling this way. The main thing is to keep a roof over your head and plod through this, it will pass. Keep people that you owe money to such as utilities, rent, mortgage, whatever..in the know. Don't ignore letters, deal with them, one at a time.
I have MS, its a battle....have you got a supportive medical team? nOnce I got diagnosed, the ms specialist nurses have been excellent in responding to my queries and worries. Keep reaching out...you are going to get through this :)

Thanks for this Becky. It means a lot. I do know how to move through the Mandatory and in to the Appeal etc as have had this before. My mental health is not too stable at the minute and the MS was only confirmed by MRI a few weeks ago. Prior to that it was a possible and a working diagnosis of fybromyalgia. I had first MS episode 20 years ago. The whole strain of this is just not good for my all round health and of course I am wondering how I can balance the books till I get through it. Then there is the struggle to reorganise the evidence, gather further reports etc It all takes its toll.

Hi Thistlelass

As Becky has stated below you are not alone, I have seen some shocking assessments. I am now at the stage where nothing shocks me.

If you have any queries then please do come back to the forum.
