OXYGEN USE AND PIP was created by mackey
How does Oxygen count in pip assessment, is it classed as an aid or appliance, or medicine.
I am on ltot and ambulatory oxygen for exercise desaturation and need to use Oxygen for all activities requiring exertion.and cannot even walk 10 meters without it.
Has any Oxygen user been through the PIP process and how did you get on.
Any Help or Advice would be Appreciated

Hi Mac

The NICE guidelines say that Oxygen should be treated as a drug.

bnf.nice.org.uk/treatment-summary/oxygen.html

And I would do this for your PIP assessment, but remember to mention in in every question where it has an impact on your ability to carry out the PIP activities.

Hi,and thanks Bis
As its classed as a Drug (Medicine) would that mean that if I cant do an activity without Oxygen, would it be classed as unable to do the activity reliably ,as in the walking distance as I cannot walk the 20mtrs without it due to exercise desaturation and breathlessness.

Hi Mac

What you will need to describe clearly is what 'benefit' you receive from using the oxygen. But if it only allows you to walk say - 2 meters, but you still walk much slower, and you still struggle to breathe and then you would need to rest for a long time before you could attempt it again, or you could not attempt it again at all- you need to say so. Don't leave them to guess the impact the oxygen has. If you cannot do something again compared to a person who doesn't need oxygen could do then you cannot do it reliably. (also don't forget the safety aspect.

If you normally use the oxygen then you should reply on this basis, if there are situations when you don't or cannot, cooking would spring to mind due to a fire risk, then explain why can't,
