ESA - descriptors guidance was created by KPPurple
Hi
Hope someone can help.
I might have to give up work due to my disability. My sight has become worse and can only see out of one eye, I have nausea and dizzy when I look at a computer, phone etc. I moved away from family and friends for the new jog and didn’t know my eyes would detoriate.
I completed the ESA test and based on that I would be placed in the work capability group.
I’m confused by the test and which descriptors apply to me, I think the following apply to me:
1. I use a long cane but can go out without help if I have my long cane and know the route, if not then I would need help if the route was unfamiliar.
2. I use a magnifier / audio. I can’t see danger signs such as fire exit from a reasonable distance.
which isn’t useful if you need to find the sign quickly
I know a permanent job is like gold dust in this current economy but well being, community and support around me is more importance to my overall well being.
Can I apply for contribution based esa? I wouldn’t meet the criteria for the income ESA.
Will it affect my other benefits I receive, pip?
Hope someone can help.

Hi KPPurple
Applying for new style ESA will not affect your PIP claim. You state 'I wouldn’t meet the criteria for the income ESA', CB ESA depends on your national insurance contributions, have a look at the link below.
ESA now called "legacy ESA" is no longer available to new claims except in very special circumstances . (The claimant needs to be receiving the Severe Disability Premium).
The difference is that legacy ESA was one benefit consisting of two eligibility criteria, one based on the claimant's NI Contribution history (Contribution Based ESA) and the other on their personal circumstances (Income Related ESA).
New Style ESA only considers the claimant's NI Contributions, the equivalent to ESA(IR) is Universal Credit.
You can see how much benefit you might receive by putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators;
www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators
Have a look at our ESA/UC Claim guide on the following link and if you have any specific questions then come back to the forum.

Thanks for the info
How will I figure out how much national insurance contributions I’ve been paid ? I can only apply for the c esa
I won’t be able,to apply for the income esa because of the savings cap put on it.
