Old style esa and universal credit help was created by karenwb9
I’m hoping someone can offer me some much needed Advice please
I was on incapacity benefit back in 2002 and transferred to ESA contribution based and in the support group when the changes came into effect 2011/12 I am also on pip enhanced for both ( due to help and advice from B&W)
My husband was retired off on the grounds of ill health 2018 he is also on ESA and in the support group as well as pip enhanced for both, he has a small pension and he also has industrial injury benefit, we have tried to get help towards our rent and we’re advised to co tact universal credit, we had to endure a strict and exhausting process at the job centre, only to be told our claim was nil. We spoke to someone from welfare rights who advised us to close our UC claim which we have now done because we would have been able to keep more of our income before rent deductions when claiming under the old style ESA. I have since written to the ESA but due to current crisis I’ve not heard anything, which is understandable, I just wondered if anyone would know the answer, I appreciate housing benefit is one of the 6 legacy payments but I don’t believe we should have to go through Universal Credit, who state you will always be better off on universal credit because this wasn’t the case for us.
We are however starting to get some help with council tax. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Universal Credit is a single payment which includes Housing Benefit, if they have assessed you as not being entitled to any UC then this would imply that you are not entitled to Housing Benefit due to your income, I don't think this will be any different if you could apply for HB directly but for completeness, you can only make a new claim for HB if one of you is entitled to Income Related ESA and the Severe Disability Premium, both his pension and the IIDB will be treated as income and deducted £ for £ from any ESA(IR) you might be entitled to.

You can try putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators to see if there has been a mistake.
