PIP2 Queries was created by Lawson
Hello Guys. I rarely post -just a few queries checking myself (can’t find in FAQ).
1)Someone with permanent ,long standing degenerative chronic pain issues can walk mainly (only with sticks and other aids) 20metres (on occasion further with intermittent resting (i.e. hospital corridors if nobody available to push wheelchair) but cannot walk any distance at all without severe pain in various areas of body during walking and standing still. Afterwards crescendo of pain can prevent repeating walking -except very minimally indoors (with aids) for hours, days and sometimes weeks so not Reliably. Wanted to check I am reading guide correctly where it indicates that for Q14 – Moving around on PIP2 form it would be more useful to not tick the “Less than 20metres” box and explain in additional information or referenced attachment keeping all info. together (is being done for most answers rather than splitting up)?
2)Most questions ask “How long does it take you to do this activity” i.e. Dressing & undressing. Is this a must as times vary considerably. I know that “it varies” is an option but still very difficult?
3)The form asks for a “diary” of how your condition affects you with tasks etc.(your guide has a good example sheet). A Pain & activity diary was kept for many years with twice daily pain scores for body areas. Eventually this was stopped as a) it was totally subjective & not building a pattern and b) emphasised focus on the pain rather than distraction. Therefore is sending a daily diary with the PIP2 from a must if you have fluctuating conditions and what time period should it be over if so?
Have forgotten the final question(thank goodness they cry). Thank you so much for all of your help. Although we can’t see each other I suggest that tonight just before 8p.m. when the forum opens we give you guys an “NHS” style minute’s applause for all you do all of the time. Much appreciated. Stay safe.

Hi Lawson

1) Less than 20ms

2) I know your condition is variable but you need to describe what it is like for the majority of the time You can always give a range of times. Don't underestimate - many people do.

3) Many people don't include a diary and it doesn't stop them from getting their award. If you have a fluctuating pain condition - you may be spending all your time trying to fill it in, or forget quite important moments. If you can offer them a month do so, if it's only a week it gives them an example. If you can't manage one - don't get stressed about it. You can always attach a note saying you would have liked to, but it wasn't possible.

Glad we can help. Hope you and your loved ones stay safe too.

Thanks BIS.
Will follow the "Less than 20 metres" as you have indicated. I was a bit concerned if I should go by the info. re: page 64 of the guide saying "If, in your opinion you can walk just 20 metres then you may be better off not ticking any of the boxes but instead explain in the Extra Information box that you can walk no more than 20 metres".
This was bearing in mind that any walking at all causes severe pain , discomfort, fatigue etc. and bad effects afterwards and any further was only done rarely and with even more difficulties afterwards. Following your advice I should tick the box (and obviously put other info. to go with it anyway. Thank you BIS if I now am o.k. with this?

I was going by the Guide page 64 re:Q14a – “If, in your opinion you can walk just 20metres then you may be better off not ticking any of the boxes but instead explain in the Extra Information box that you can walk no more than 20 metres”.
This is correct for the vast majority of the time but never any distance without pain and only any further if no option than to try and force it thus causing more pain and consequently much longer recovery time.Following your advice the “Less than 20 metres” box should be ticked and further info. still added in the Extra Information box? Sorry – the penny is dropping – I just need absolute reassurance at times.
Thank you for your patience to you all

Hi Guys
Quickly Q14 (PIP2) Moving around.
It does not mention steps or stairs. Does that have to be in the answer?
Thanks

Hi Lawson

The question is predominatly about the distance you can walk, and it doesn't matter whether you include stairs are not. At assessment time it is a question the assessor will always ask a claimant with mobility problems.
