Dla and fluctuating condition was created by Clare
Hi,

I have sat down to tackle my daughter dla renewal.
I am worried that I will fill the forms in wrongly and not get the right award for her needs. My problem is whilst she has hypermobiity and autism, she also has functional neurological disorder. FND is a fluctuating condition, my daughter uses crutches given to her by her physio alot of the time. Her leg can give way when she walks, or it will become completely numb and she will not be able to lift it at all, and cannot walk. She could be unable to walk for 4 or 5 days ,and them able to again. I have medical reports that say the condition fluctuates and some days she manages without crutchs but is in pain when she walks.

Sorry for the long post. l am unsure how to convey this in the dla form . If l tick yes in the box where it asks if the condition varies doesn't that mean dwp are less likely to award high care or possibly mobility , as she has some better days yet is still in pain.

Should I specify the percentage of the time she is effected by the condition? If so its 90% of the time with pain , and 70% of the time with mobility.

I could only see the regulations for pip online regarding fluctuating conditions .

Thank you in advance for you wonderful help.

Hi Clare

Not everyone fits into the boxes, what you can do is write next to the boxes ... 'see below' and then write in the box how your daughters condition affects them, if you need more space use additional paper, but make sure you put your name and ref number on each page and number each additional page also add the question number.

You can also write a supporting document about what support you give to your daughter and help from other members of your family, don't forget to sign it.

Have a look at our New Child DLA Claim guide (dated 26/03/20) to see if she meets the criteria for an award, it will also help you complete the form.
