  			 				Hi organic

As per my previous answer.

New Style ESA is a Contribution Based benefit and is not means tested with the exception of pension income which can reduce the amount that you receive.

The Income Related benefit that goes with NS ESA is Universal Credit.

To claim the Housing Element you have to apply for UC, this component is means tested, so if you qualify you can claim both NS ESA and UC.

Claimants get mixed up with NS ESA and Legacy ESA, the only way I can explain NS ESA is to say it is contribution based UC (although contribution based UC does not exist, it's called NS ESA).

You cannot change from CB ESA LCWRA to UC LCWRA as CB ESA LCWRA does not exist, under legacy benefits you could claim CB ESA support group.

It gets confusing as there are three types of ESA; IR ESA, CB ESA (legacy benefits) and NS ESA (UC)

Hope that helps

Gary

  			 				Hi Gary,

Thanks for clearing up the to three types of ESA.

I am on New Style ESA (UC). I was awarded LCWRA.

It is my understanding that claiming the Housing Element of UC won't trigger a move from New Style ESA (UC). I will still receive it but this income will be deducted from my UC award. Is this correct?

Kind regards,

Organic

  			 				Hi organic

You are correct, when you apply for UC any award for NS ESA will be taken into account.

You can check your benefit entitlements by using an on line benefit calculator.

  			 				Hi Gary,

I am on New Style ESA (UC). I was awarded LCWRA.

I am about to move. I will need to apply for help with the rent for the first time. My savings is below £6000.

I have sought specialist advice as you previously recommended.

I have been advised to apply for Universal Credit to get the Housing Element. I was told I don't need to provide a fit note to do this. I was advised to make an entry on my journal that I am on New Style ESA and that I was awarded LCWRA.

Is this correct? As some of your other posts in this forum say as a cautionary note to provide a fit note to the work coach.

Thanks,

organic

  			 				Hi organic

You are correct and correctly advised.

The Income Related benefit that goes with NS ESA is Universal Credit. You claim the housing element from Universal Credit, you do not need to provide a 'fit note' as you are already receiving LCWRA.
