Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi PD
When you put in for a mandatory reconsideration, you can say that you are satisfied with one part of the award, and challenge the other. However, the DWP will always look at the whole award. Is there a risk that you could lose what you have been awarded - yes. However, I have only ever heard of two people's awards being downgraded even further when they put in for an MR. The most likely scenario is that your award would remain the same.
As well as ringing the DWP and saying you want to put in for an MR - if you haven't already you need to get hold of the assessor's report which has been used to make the decision so you understand exactly what was said about the walking distance and why the assessor came to that conclusion, so you know how to combat it.

Yes, your current award remains in payment during an MR and any appeal.
