Self harm not noted in PA4 report was created by TracyO
Hi there, I have received my PA4 report and besides having numerous flaws throughout. I recorded covertly but only my answers. It took me a week to listen to myself answering HP's questions knowing when she asked about my anxiety I started to tell her that i have started to self harm again by doing XXXXX to myself but before i could finish she cut me off with 3 questions so quickly in succession I closed down. 1. when was the last time you self harmed 2. Have you ever cut yourself 3. have you had any suicidal thoughts... she asked me so quickly and coldly.. I became really emotional couldn't speak so I just answered.. I don't want to talk about it, Its too upsetting. If she had not interrupted me when i was trying to tell her I wouldn't of SHUT down. The worst part about it, she has reported that i cried in her Observations 'became tearful discussing her conditions but recovered and continued the assessment'. NO record NOT even bothered to record it anywhere in the report! Even HOC Suicidal/self-harm;- none
I feel ashamed guilty and stupid for telling a complete stranger about my self harm. Its really upsetting when i listen to my recording. Its really sad. I need to mandatory reconsideration but finding really hard... Please advise anyone?

Hello Tracy,

You are NOT stupid, and you should not feel ashamed or guilty for doing what the law requires you to do. The only person who should feel any of those emotions is the person who is a qualified Health Care Professional who was in charge of the assessment and who was reasonability for keeping you physically and mentally safe.

My best advice to is something I recognise you may not be able to do, particularly given the current covid environment. That is to find yourself a PIP buddy. Someone whom you trust enough to reveal all the intimate information which you are required to reveal in the PIP process. It is a personal passion of mine that no-one should have to go through this process alone, in particularly anyone with Mental Health issues. If you can find such a person, get them to be your confidant and secretary, tell them about the issues you have with Daily Living and Mobility and get them to record them in a letter to the DWP. The letter should be written in the third person – i.e. Tracy cannot x, y and z. It should include a statement that I (your PIP buddy) am having to write the letter since Tracy’s anxiety means that she is unable. It should be sent with a covering letter from you saying that you have read your friend’s letter and agree with it.

What should be in that letter, whether or not you get someone to do it for you, or have to do it yourself is a list of what you disagree with. You need to not only identify what is wrong, but say what your reality is, ideally giving real life examples.

You should also make sure you include a complaint about the assessor how giving you an opportunity to explain how your anxiety affects you and no recording the fact that you self harmed and had suicidal ideation.

If you have not read our guides I would highly recommend them.

PIP resources

They are all good, but I would suggest you start with the first link, and then scroll down to the section on appeals and MRs.

I hope this helps a little, and please do get back to us if you wish.
Catherine

p.s. you could also make an official complaint about the Assessor, but I fear that doing this may drain your limited energies and distract you from the more essential MR.

You are far from being stupid. Nor should you feel guilty or have any reason to feel ashamed. The assessments are very stressful for a lot of people and others may be able to identify themselves feeling the same as you at the time. However, there is really no reason for you to feel like that, the professional assessor should have realised an had more empathy for what you were trying to explain. I hope you get on well with your MR and Catherine has given some really good advice regarding a PIP buddy ....

Thank you for your kind response, i'm not too sure about sharing it again with anyone just yet (fills me with dread).. Think i'll try to concentrate on my MR for now But I will make a complaint because it helps awareness it should've been an alarm bell. Thanks again x

Hi Tracy, and first I'll add my sympathy for the appalling way that person treated you, to what the other have already said. just checking, if you asked for the PA4 quickly after your assessment, have you had your decision yet, you don't mention it? If you have not yet had your decision you actually can write in to explain all the faults in the PA4 BEFORE the Decision Maker decides what to award. You would have to be quick, maybe you could send a short letter first saying you have identified a number of significant issues with the PA4 and will give further details as soon as your mental health allows, since the assessor caused you severe distress which is still affecting you. Also say this is not an MR request but you reserve the right to make one later. Then try to go through and make ice cold non emotional statements about each time the assessor's comments are wrong, and send that letter too. If you do have to do an MR in the end all your work will be useful for it anyway, so it's worth a go.
Viewpoint I'm commenting from is having written in to 'take apart' our daughter's PA4 which was quite twisted and misleading, and she got enhanced x 2 without MR.
Best wishes and no shame about your illness, whatever you decide to do. Soo well done for getting the recording you did, you are certainly NOT stupid :). I think you will find it useful, especially if you can lend it to a buddy as suggested, you don't then have to play it back yourself and distress yourself.
