Informing ESA about PIP? was created by Frank
Hi. Last week I won my PIP tribunal after 3 year waiting and went from initially 2 points to enhanced Daily Living and enhanced Mobility.
I currently receive ESA (support group) and was wondering if I need to inform ESA that I get PIP and a back payment? As in change of circumstances.
Or will this be automatically done as it's DWP all together?
Thanks

Hi Frank,
Firstly well done on your fantastic news!
If you receive income based ESA, live alone (or without any other adults) and have no one who claims Carers Allowance, then you may be eligible to claim severe disability premium by virtue of receiving a Daily Living component of PIP. On this basis you may want to tell DWP about this to claim your SDP.
Alternatively, if you have someone who has been caring for you, at least 35 hrs per week, earns less than £128 per week, this carer will be able to claim Carer’s Allowance for looking after you. This can be a new claim, but if it has been ongoing it can be backdated to start if PIPaward or a date after then if later.
You can't claim SDP if someone gets carer's allowance for caring for you.
However, even if SDP can't be claimed, I would still tell DWP. As you are already on support group rate this won't get increased, but you can't rely on one department of DWP informing the other, and it might just mean that an ESA review is later by virtue of the PIP award.
If you receive Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction, it is worthwhile informing the local authority in case your PIP award gives you any extra allowance for these benefits.
I hope this helps.

Hi
Just had the call from DWP. They have put it into the system now and should get the letter within the next few days.
She also asked if we need to inform ESA and they said no because the system will inform them as it's linked.

Hi Frank. Your backpay will be over 5K so you will be ok as this is not counted as income ‘during the life of your claim’. Do some googling to quote the legislation at them, but your ESA should not be affected.
If you are living with someone you probably will not be able to claim Severe Disability Premium (SDP) unless your live-in partner is also disabled.
Congrats
