Blue badge and PIP application. was created by Mark
Hi.
Just joined and I'm in process of applying for PIP, I'm claiming N/S ESA support group and I was issued a Blue badge in September 21, would it help in my PIP application if I mention and send a copy of the blue badge (issued for MH and moving).
Thanks.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Mark
Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is.
Welcome to Benefits and Work .
You don't need to send a copy of your Blue Badge but it will do no harm to inform them you have been issued with a blue badge, you just need to tie in your blue badge award with PIP descriptor(s).
PIP is not awarded because of the condition but rather the limitations that result and prevent a claimant from completing a range of everyday activities. Have a look at our PIP Claim guide for a better understanding of the criteria you will need to meet.
www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip
Read about the reliability element in the guide - if you cannot do something:
• Safely – in a fashion that is unlikely to cause harm to themselves or to another person.
• To a necessary and acceptable standard – given the nature of the activity.
• Repeatedly – as often as is reasonably required.
• In a reasonable time period – no more than twice as long as a person without a physical or mental health condition would take to carry out the activity.
then you should not be considered able to do the activity.
If you have any further questions, then please return to the forum.

Thank you for the reply.
I can only manage around 25-50 metres without pain (failed back surgery) and suffer severe anxiety around other vehicles following being knocked down in a car park.

Hi Mark,
Sending in a copy of my blue badge did not help me with the mobility component of PIP. I did not appeal as my ESA renewal arrived 3 days later (too much stress).
Something I did learn from this is:
if you had a walking assessment by an Occupational Therapist as part of your blue badge application this can provide proof that you are unable to walk at half the speed of a well person if you appeal (only a physio or OT can assess walking). This would be very valuable at appeal if the PIP assessor did not watch you walking over 50m. My PIP assessor asked me to raise my knees against her hand (she did not apply any downward force. I told my physio and he said the only thing that can be established from that assessment is that the nerves in the lower limbs are intact.
Hope this helps.
Philip

Hi Phillip.
I was awarded my blue badge without the need for a 121 assessment for walking or any phone contact (sept 2020), as I just applied online along with several specialist medical reports dated in the past year and it was approved within a week.
I have mentioned on the PIP application that it was awarded without assessment.
Mark.

Hi Mark. i would photocopy the ‘blue badge’ letter you received from the council, and also include all medical evidence you submitted to get your ‘blue badge’. It is all relevant. Also ask your GP to write you a support letter if you don’t see any specialists.
