Hi there,
Seeing as this disability onslaught will never end i have thought about moving out of england.
Has ayone concidered moving to scotland? Would life be better for disabled people such a myself or will it be the same or worse? would it be possible to make a council house transfer to live in scotland. I live In a east yorkshire council flat at the moment.
Universal credit will leave me with 25 pounds a week to live on before food annd other bills. so its a fight for survival and not something i can giggle about.

Any help or guidance would be helpful. Thanks

Hi Paperman

Can't advise you on this I'm afraid. Hopefully, some members of the forum will have a view.

At the moment, we (in Scotland) receive the same benefits as the other countries within the UK. There are a few differences - the bedroom tax is mitigated (for those who already lived in under-occupied properties prior to bedroom tax legislation), personal care costs are free within the home care provision, there is a carer's additional payment (£520pa) for carers and there are child-related payments in addition to that paid by UK system.

Therefore, unless you are a carer, have children or require personal care there I can see no financial advantage to moving.

We were expecting our government to have taken over the administration of adult disability benefits by now. However two factors have delayed that, Covid (of course) and continued wrangling between Scottish and UK agencies regarding release of accurate data to allow the Scottish system to function.

Sorry, I have no knowledge of council housing swaps or the application criteria within Scottish local authorities to access council housing.

Hi Paperman,
My understanding is that cross border council house swaps MAY be possible if both Local Authorities agree it. A few hoops to jump through as you'd expect but Shelter Scotland has some information on this - not sure if it's online. Ghirl#1 is correct with her advice though. Scottish Govt is due to take control of PIP next summer and says it will introduce a soft touch review process and limit assessments. All very promising but they've a stunning record of promising stuff and never delivering so dont do anything rash at this stage is my advice.
