PIP assessment and driving was created by Anniesmum
Hello,

I have just had my PIP assessment and the assesor asked me if I drive. Currently, I do not drive as I have not taken my driving test yet. So I answered no. If I pass my driving test before the end of the year. Will I need to let the PIP people know and I am wondering if I will need to have another assessment? Currently I need to have someone with me to travel about with me as I struggle. I have never driven without someone in the car so I am always accompanied there as well.

Im massively panicing now and am in an anxiety spiral as I can't stand another assessment.

Thanks so much for any advice.

Hi SAndrew,
Do not worry about driving. This does NOT comprise part of the PIP tests.DWP ask about driving because they think that it shows you can do other things.eg adequate grip of car =can grip knife and fork for cooking or taking nutrition. Also driving car =adequate concentration so you can remember to take meds! Most of us on the forum can think of a dozen reasons why ability to drive doesn't prove ability to be able to do PIP activities.
PIP is awarded on the basis of not being able to do the various descriptor activities. Unless a newly passed driving test changes your functional ability then it won't matter whether you can or can't drive. This is the same as a swanky new wheelchair. Will it make you walk better, no, but it will make it easier to move around. I suspect driving yourself is the same.
So, please don't worry, no need to tell DWP and therefore no requirement for a further assessment at this time.
I hope this helps.
