Can't understand my UC statements

I was migrated to UC from ir-ESA in January, so I've now received 3 statements.

Initially, I couldn't understand why I was still receiving ESA on the statements - but finally managed to speak to ESA, who said that I was apparently also on an element of contributary ESA, which is continuing.........

Now the problem is, that the amount my statements say is being deducted from the UC payment because of my ESA payments is not accurate to the amount of ESA I actually receive in my bank account. I always receive less.

I keep asking for an explanation and keep being told that, because UC is a monthly benefit, other benefits will be calculated to produce a monthly amount.

Am I being really stupid to not understand why this means it's okay that my statements say I'm entitled to receive more than I'm actually receiving each month?

To make it more confusing, in the change over from ESA to UC/ESA, I received an overpayment.. They have so far taken back £30 of the £182 (which was itemised as a deduction on that month's statment). In the following (most recent statement), there are no itemised deductions for the overpayment, yet the total amount of benefit I received is £40 less than the statement says I'm entitled to receive this month (which is the biggest discrepancy so far).

I do see that, on the statements it says that the amount deducted for ESA is an 'average' of other benefits I am contuing to claim, but what does that really mean?

How am I supposed to know if my payments are correct, if the statements are not intended to accurate?

Is anyone else finding this?

Hi EF

Your question --
I keep asking for an explanation and keep being told that, because UC is a monthly benefit, other benefits will be calculated to produce a monthly amount.
All that means is that ESA is calculated as a weekly amount and you get paid fortnightly. So they work out a daily rate of ESA so that can be applied to the UC monthly Assessment Period.
Evidently mistakes are being made which is not surprising as about 85,000 new UC claims are being migrated monthly.
Here is a guide on how to check your statements and report mistakes.

This is the latest reply on my UC journal, after I persisted and asked again why my statements are giving a different amount than I'm actually receiving......

"Hi Eleanor,

£138.20 (ESA) x 52 / 12 = £598.87 (deduction on UC statement)

Thanks"

I understand that this is how they convert a fortnightly benefit to a monthly one, but I'm still none the wiser why I'm entitled to £809.64 per month but I don't receive that. I receive apparently random amounts that are less than that. As I've only received 3 payments so far, I've no idea if some months I will receive more than £809.64 and it will somehow balance out over the year........

If anyone else is getting the same with their statements, it would be so helpul to know.

I would seek advice from an advice agency such as CAB or Welfare Rights. They should be able to offer you a telephone or face to face appointment and work through the figures with you.

Hi, I had some 30 odd pounds off my first statement and a monthly average ESA (c) taken off. The total esa you get for the year taken off is the same amount you get for the same year. In most assessment periods you will only receive 2 esa fortnightly payments and this will be less than they tae out but on some assessment periods depending how the dates fall you will get 3 esa fortnightly payments. This time you are getting more than deducted. This is how it is balanced out. You must receive 26 fortnightly payments a year. Hope that helps.
