Going abroad PIP & ESA/UC - duration clarification, extenuating circumstances

Hi All,

I understand and appreciate many have asked already about how long we're allowed to go abroad if in receipt of PIP and ESA/UC. I've read the GOV website and other sources and understand that it's likely to be a total of 28 days as in receipt of both.

However here's where I'm seeking clarification, because there's no information on the GOV.UK site or elsewhere:

The reason I will need to go abroad is because a family member is very unwell.

1) If I'm aboard at the time they pass away and it's close to when I need to return, can I extend my stay in order to attend the funeral?

2) Alternatively, if I go abroad, returning within the allowed amount of time and then they pass away can I return for the funeral? And, if so, how much time needs to pass between each time going abroad?

In both of these scenarios I understand I will need to supply evidence which I will be able to.

Trying to plan for what may be about to come without breaking any of the rules and losing my income and support.

Many thanks in advance for your help and guidance.

Hi Wiggles

I'm sorry, but your question is outside the remit of the forum, and this is something you would need to clarify with the DWP. They are the only ones who can tell you what the impact is, whether you have to stay abroad longer, or if you have to go back for a period of time.
