Contacting doctors etc about PIP

On the PIP 2 form it says: Do not approach your GP to ask for a report as they may charge for this.

However, I wanted to speak to a doctor about applying for PIP because the doctor I used to have who knew all my history has retired. I've had an autoimmune condition and fibromyalgia for 13 years. In recent years, I haven't gone to the doctors about this because there's nothing much they can do. Do you think I'm OK to speak to them? The last doctor I spoke to was about HRT, I want to try to keep the same one where possible moving forward.

Also, I speak to my liver consultant every few months (unfortunately I had a call with him not so long back before I started my application for PIP), would I be OK just to let them know I'm applying for PIP or to ask for a statement?

Hi HC

Some GP's do charge for reports and some of the reports are not fit for purpose.

It is perfectly ok for you to speak to your Dr, they may even offer to write you a supporting letter, same applies to your liver consultant.

The more supporting documents you can gather the better your chances.

Hi HC

I'm astounded that it actually says on the PIP form not to approach your GP for a report!

You cannot rely on them contacting your GP or other medical professionals that you list in your application form, in fact, the majority of them won't.

The onus is on you to provide as much medical evidence as possible and as Gary has said in his reply, I would strongly encourage you to do so. The more medical evidence you submit, the more likely your application will be successful in the first instance. Also, it could mean that they do a "paper based" assessment rather than a telephone or face to face assessment.

Best of Luck
