I suffer from hyperacusis. A car horn sounding near me, supermarket alarm, child screaming etc..... can make me shout out, throw me forwards or make me cower down. I cannot control it. It is very distressing and when it happens I have to get myself home as quickly as possible, I cannot think clearly and my nerves ring like a cymbal for a day or two . My doctor is referring me to the audiology department at a hospital.
I am envisaging that for the safety of myself and others I will have to wear some kind of special noise limiting earplug when I am outside the house (until a long-term treatment is found).
Assuming there is an ear plug that will control the noise to a point where it is safe to go out, do I complete section 11 and 12 of the PIP form as if I am using the earplugs or without.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Kevin1342

I have not heard of hyperacusis, do you use the earplugs now, in your post your talk about the future, I would advise you to complete the form in the present, if you do not have earplugs, then explain how your condition affects you, don't assume anything, only state the facts.

Hello Gary
I don't use ear plugs at the moment because it can make the ears more sensitive. However I am hopeful that recent developments in technology might make something suitable available.
Thank you for your advice, I can see now that I need to take a "this is how it is" approach.
Best wishes, Kevin

Hi Kevin. I have suffered with hypercausis since losing my hearing overnight ( sudden sensorneurinal hearing loss) due to sudden hearing loss, the side affects are quite severe. This happened after a spinal injury.
Unfortunately I have never found a cure for hypercausis & really struggle still to this day with noise & all the other side affects of the SSHL( although I'm deaf) mines a very rare condition. On my PIP I complete 11 & 12, although I have severe mobility issues due to my spine, but hypercausis does cause me a lot problems with noise & being outside etc not sure if that helps? I feel for you, as its an awful condition to live with.
