Universal Credit, Carer’s Premium & Severe Disability Premium

Hi everyone,

Myself and my husband have just received Universal Credit Migration Notices.
It says we must make a joint claim. I claim income related ESA and my husband is on my ESA claim. I am a bit apprehensive about it. We have until 8 December 2025 to do it.
My question is; we both get PIP, I get a Carer’s Premium for my husband and we both get Severe Disability Premium. Once we migrate do we still get a Severe Disability Premium or is it called Transition Support? Also I read somewhere that if I get Carer’s premium we are not able to get a Transition Support. Do I need to stop the Carer’s Premium now or am I completely wrong in my thinking?
I would be very grateful for any help and advice with this at all as this is all very confusing.

Thank you
Jessica

Hi Tigerlily11

You are correct, you have to make a joint claim. You need to apply for UC just after you receive your ESA, I assume that your husband is in the support group, if I am correct, then you will get the LCWRA element on top of your couple element plus your Carer element.

When you transition over to UC you do not receive any disability premiums such as SDP, you may receive a transitional element which ensures you do not experience an immediate reduction in income by comparing your legacy benefit entitlement to your Universal Credit element.

We would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Specialist; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies in your area advicelocal.uk
