Acting as Appointee for Claimant who has to move over to UC was created by Sooty1994
Hello
I'd be grateful for some advice. I act as an appointee for my nephew. My nephew is vulnerable and doesn't have the capacity to manage his affairs.
I have now received a letter stating that my nephew (me, I guess) has to make his claim. I have called UC and they told me to watch a youtube video about how to make a claim. I am really concerned as the video doesn't show the information I need.
The way things work with his finances, at the moment, has worked well for the last maybe three years, since we put this set-up in place. His money is paid into my bank account (it's a separate account in my name and only used for nephew) I have all his DD and S/Os set up. I then have S/O's set up to give him funds on a daily basis and a larger payment on Fridays. This works well. Before we did this, it was disasterous and he was getting into all sorts of trouble and people selling him things he couldn't afford etc.
Question 1: With UC, is it acceptable to continue with the set-up we have in place, ie, that his payments are made direct to myself? Although, I'm not sure I like the thought of UC looking into any accounts with my name.
Question 2: As my nephews appointtee, will I forever be getting messages telling me to go online and do things with his Universal Credit Journal? My nephew is very unlikely to ever be able to do any paid or even unpaid work.

Hi Sooty1994
As an Appointee it is expected that his Benefits will be paid into your bank account.
When you originally took on the Appointeeship you would have agreed to administer your nephew's Benefits for him and this will carry on under UC. As he is excused looking for work then there should be little administration once the UC claim is up and running.
