I may have misread the new guidance, but the implication seems to be that if the claimant needs support in the various activities then the person giving the support has to be physically present. I’m wondering therefore how some sections of the form can be answered in the tick box parts of the form if the claimant needs a lot of support but that support frequently comes from a Carer on the phone for example ? And also when the claimant has a problem and gets distressed/aggressive/loses control but a Carer is not there to help - in PIP or previous ESA WCA one could say that the claimant needs constant support, even though they do not get it by the Carer being physically present.

Hi Anneb

Support and Supervision have different meanings.

You need to look at the definition of the words: supervision, prompting or assistance, page 27 of B&W PIP guide

I have just had a quick check on the guide, page 28: “Supervision” means the continuous presence of another person for the purpose of ensuring your safety.

DWP guidance states that:
‘Supervision is a need for the continuous presence of another person to avoid a serious adverse
event from occurring to the claimant. The risk must be likely to occur in the absence of such
supervision. To apply, supervision must be required for the full duration of the activity.'

The main way that the meaning of the word ‘supervision’ is different for Disability Living Allowance
(DLA) compared to PIP is in the sense that, for PIP, supervision must be ‘continuous'.
