Joint UC 6 month reviews (sorry long rant needed) was created by Hipchick
Hello All,
My Hub and I began to receive joint UC 6 months ago (both now disabled after my Hub became very ill from Covid, after working all his life) - I bitterly regret being forced to do the joint claim they took my (old style) "disabled group" ESA from me, effectively leaving me personally £400 worse off each month.
Anyway, we have just had a call from UC (were told it was a "review" but in reality it was to inform us they want 4 month bank statements from us both). The woman we spoke to told us we would be repeatedly having 6 month reviews !!
I am incensed and frankly worried silly.
In my mind this is an infringement of privacy. Due to life long (rare genetic) illnesses I have been on various disability payments through the years, and have NEVER been told I have to give 4 month bank statements every 6 months (effectively showing them my private finances 8 months out of 12)!
I have nothing to hide but surely this is wrong - morally if not legally?!
As I am responsible for my Autistic children benefits too ( well they're legally adults but...), their money, and spendings, are also going to be shown on my bank statements, and I have no way of separating any of that to show these nosy "people".
As apparently I can't send photo shots of my online bank statements (on which I could write notes explaining all that), because I have to send them via pdf - so I'll have to write a separate note on the UC website and hope they read it. Rather than them wrongly reacting to whatever assumptions they'll make.
Sorry that's an "aside" really isn't it but I'm fuming!
My imagination, and anxiety, is going into overdrive scared they are going to take more money from me willie nillie, on a whim, whenever they choose to, each time they do these blasted reviews.
I feel as though we are unsightly being monitored and they'll penalise us if they do not agree with how we spend our money.
No one has any right to dictate such things. Are we not allowed to live a life like other people now?!
IF all this is merely to check that. they are paying us correct amounts then how is all this fuss necessary?
After all they pay us the UC. Therefore they already have a record of how much they pay to my account.
They don't need our bank statements to prove that.
So my conclusion is forced to believing that this is a blatant bullying tactic. And I loathe bullies of any sort.
So. My question is this.
Is there some class action, a group against this invasion (of my, my husband - and my children's - privacy)?
Because i can not believe we are alone in this, and if there is one I want in on it.
There has to be some way in which to fight back against this oppressive posturing ?!
There is no point in my complaining on the phone - I already tried to explain the insanity of this and the woman white washed our thoughts and questions, saying it was what they do! I can understand how people might get angry, I wouldn't rant at them as it's futile - and I'd then be penalised for it, and they seem to be slavering at the mouth for any excuse as it is!
Apologies for the long rant. If no one knows of a way to fight back on this then I don't really expect an answer to help - atm I desperately need to vent at this overbearing, snoopy, depressing weight now dumped on my (already heavy) shoulders !
It's at times like this I wish I were able to drink!

Hi Hipchick
I'm sorry this is causing you so much stress.
I'm afraid I'm not going to make things any better, because the DWP has the right to ask for copies of bank statements. Four months sounds like a lot, but the number of bank statements they ask for varies, and some members here have been asked for 4 years' worth of statements, while others have been asked for 7 years. I don't think there is anything suspicious in what they have asked - though I understand why you feel it is an invasion of privacy and it will feel burdensome if you do in fact have to do this twice a year.
