Lost job during PIP claim at tribunal stage was created by Ronnie
Hello, I have submitted an online appeal for a paper-based tribunal 'hearing' and I am awaiting the response from the DWP - they have until 14th August 2026 to respond to my appeal. In the meantime, I lost my long-standing job (self-employed) on 3rd August 2026 (devastated..). I didn't lose the job through any fault of my own, or for health reasons, but the company that outsourced work to me is going insolvent. I worked from home and I am not able to work outside of the home. I am 60 and unlikely to work ever again.
I'm just wondering if I should write to the DWP or the courts to let them know I have lost my job. I'm unable to use the phone to the DWP or the courts (too stressful), and I always write instead. It is my first PIP claim so I don't know the ins and outs of everything. Please can anybody advise me? Thanks.

Hi Ronnie,
I'm sorry to hear that you have lost your job. PIP is a benefit for anyone who has sufficient disability within the various descriptors. Anyone can PIP - whether they work or are unemployed.
Since your employer has become insolvent and can no longer employ this isn't relevant to your PIP claim. You do not need no notify the tribunal or DWP (PIP department). (If you were leaving work because of increasing health problems, then this would be different.)
However, it is possible that you might be entitled to a redundancy payment from your ex employer. Additionally, you may be able to claim Universal Credit if you have low income and limited or no capital. Similarly depending on your NI contributions you may alternatively be eligible for New style ESA.
I think it would be helpful if you contact a local advice centre and ask them to perform a benefit check. This should confirm what benefits you might be eligible to receive, and they may also be able to help with any application forms too.
Good luck with everything.
I hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. I was wondering if I had to put in a Change of Circumstances and I'm relieved to know that I don't! Or if I should let the tribunal know before they reach a decision at my paper "hearing". The DWP used "motivation" against me because I had a job (I worked from home), so I wondered if it was worth informing them.
Because I was self-employed, I didn't have an employer, and so I am not entitled to a redundancy payment. I understand that I am not entitled to New Style ESA or Jobseekers Allowance because of being self-employed and having not paid Class 1 contributions in the last two years. I don't think I am entitled to any benefits at all until my savings drop below 16k, which they soon will because I have no other income.
I will contact an advice centre soon, but I am still reeling at the moment and need time to adjust and think.

Hi Ronnie
I too am sorry to hear about your lost job. As LL26 says - the loss of your job is not relevant to the Tribunal. They are being asked to judge whether the decision about the support you need was fair at the time you were assessed. They cannot judge any change in circumstances since that time. So, there is nothing to be gained by informing them that you no longer work because the company became insolvent.
I hope that you have a positive outcome from the tribunal.

Thank you, BIS...
The worst thing about claiming PIP is that my original claim was weak: I was panicking about my situation and also I did not know what to write or how to write it to give me a good chance of success. And now, even if I am successful at tribunal (doubtful), any further reviews will be based on my original weak claim. I guess everyone has to go through this, at least everyone who received no help or advice. The whole process has been like doing a university degree course backwards!

Hi Ronnie,
Don't worry unduly about whether your claim was weak. You still have time to think how to present your best case. Thinking about your health at the time of making the claim,( or what your health is today if no change,)go through each relevant descriptor.
Assuming that what you put on the claim form was correct, what further details can you can? Maybe there are some examples of when it all went wrong when attempting the activity? (Safety, taking too long, not reaching an acceptable standard and not being a keeper to repeat the activity several times in a day are important things to think about.)
Friends or family might be able to remind you of an incident or more general issues that can occur regularly.
If you feel that you answered incorrectly in the form or perhaps didn't clarify enough, then you can tell the tribunal this. I don't know whether you had any specialist benefits advice when doing the claim form but if not that's fine. Have another read of the descriptor tests here in B&W. Hopefully this will allow you to understand the appropriate legal tests better. Now try and match your disabilities to the descriptors and try to decide what points you should be awarded.
Now think how you can explain this and of course give examples. The tribunal may ask why you appear to be saying something different. Then say (if true) that you have now had a chance to find some detailed advice and realise that your initial comments did not reflect the full nature of your disability. Tell the tribunal (as appropriate) how much it hurts, how anxious you get, that you know your friends go out and do eg sports, socialising etc and you can't do it, and why. Think of the hearing as like a job interview - but where you need to 'sell' your disability. Tell it how it actually is, warts and all. I know it's very negative but the tribunal need to know the real struggles you have each and every day.
I hope this helps.
