ATOS Health Professionals was created by mum2many
Hello all,
After sending the new form back, I expect I will have to attend a medical.
My case is very unusual and not many GP’s, Doctors or Consultants have ever come across another case like mine.
Even my own GP and hospital consultant don’t know what to do for me apart from support me with medication.
Consequently, I am really worried that an ATOS Health Professional isn’t going to understand and I will lose out.
After I got my initial contact regarding the changes, I was told by a DWP representative if I failed the medical then I would be unable to claim anything at all, not even income support.
But not to worry about it!
Just wondered if this is accurate?
Thank you for any advice you can offer.

I assume this is in regard to you claiming ESA.
Any decision that is made should be in regard to your meeting the ESA descriptors, whilst your diagnosis may support you assertions as to your limitations, it will not in itself result in you being awarded ESA, so your having a rare condition may not disadvantage you in the assessment.
I hope you will understand, but without our knowing more about your situation, which is not possible in the forum, we cannot comment on whether you would be able to qualify for any other benefits.

If you are not awarded ESA you will be able to claim the assessment rate while you await appeal (if you decide to go down that route).
After that your other option would be to claim JSA and ask for special conditions to be conceded as a result of your illness/disability. You would not be able to claim IS on the grounds of inability to work although you might have other qualifying circumstances unassociated with your phycical capacity.

I suggest you get as much medical evidence you can possibly muster and get a face to face with CAB/ Welfare person to assist you.
Even though I am quite capable of completing a form, I think advice from this site and from a cab/welfare person is a much needed tool to get your point put accross to atos/dwp etc on completion of any form sent to you to fill out.
