DLA Renewal for Profound Learning Disability was created by Teresa Tunnell
Hi, I'm new to this forum and I've tried a search but couldn't find out what I needed. My son turns 16 in September and so I'm filling in his DLA renewal form using the guides here. However the guides don't seem to cover learning disability and I'm worried about losing high rate mobility for my son. The guide says that the section about needing someone with you to guide or supervise you outdoors is only for lower rate mobility. However I was under the impression that provided you had high rate care and were severely mentally impaired you could get high rate mobility. Is this not the case for adults?
My son can walk but often needs a wheelchair because he refuses to walk and he needs constant supervision so that he doesnt step into traffic etc. Currently he gets high rate care and mobility and we have a Motability car.

Our DLA Claims for Adults on Mental Health Grounds should cover learning difficulties.
Higher Rate Mobility can be awarded for an adult with Mental Health issues, but the criteria is extremely restrictive if they do not also have problems walking, they are required to be severely mentally impaired with severe behavioural problems and qualify for the highest rate of the care component.
It is covered in more detail in section 23 of the guide on page 21.

Thank you Gordon. My son has a profound learning disability with a mental age close to that of a one year old toddler. He often refuses to walk and can exhibit challenging behaviour. This is why we currently get high rate mobility. Hopefully this will also qualify him for high rate mobility as an adult.
