Income Based ESA

Hello, I am hoping someone can clarify a point for me. My son's entitlement to Contribution Based ESA will end in August. He lives at home with us. He has received a letter saying he may be entitled to Income Based ESA and he has to ring Jobcentre Plus to be assessed.

I understand that Income Based ESA will not be paid if there are 'household' savings of more than £16k and also if 'household' income/working hours exceed a certain level. My son is single, has only a couple of hundred pounds in savings and has no other income of his own. Am I correct in thinking that the savings of myself and my wife, and our income are NOT taken into account when assessing my son's entitlement? Logic and fair play would suggest I am correct but with the way things are going, who knows? I wanted to be sure.

You are correct, 'household' income in this situation usually refers to that of the claimant and any live-in partner. Your son will have to fill in an ESA3 form giving details of his income and assets, then a decision will be made as to whether he is eligible for income-related ESA.

Sorry to trouble you again. A Form ESA3 has not been sent with the letter, presumably they are waiting for a phone call and will then send out? I have found a copy on line in PDF format but it is password protected and won't let me print it.
