We don't normally advise on Tax Credits so you may want to confirm the following by getting face to face advice.
Where to get advice? Tax Credits are based on taxable income, an IB claim started before 1995 was tax exempt which is why it was not used in regard to tax credits. Contribution Based ESA is taxable and should be considered for the purposes of Tax Credits, however, you should check your payment notification from the DWP as it is possible that not all of your ESA is ESA(CB), some may be Income Related ESA; ESA(IR) which is not taxable.
