Capability for work assessment during covid-19 1 month 3 weeks ago #248737

Hello all!

I'm hoping someone can help me figure out the alternative arrangments for getting asssessed as being in the 'support group' or having 'limited capability for work AND work-related activity.' These are the groups where you get extra money (£300ish pcm) because you are unable to look for work or prepare for work.

It seems pretty clear that my PIP application will either be assessed via paper or over the telephone but the changes to the capability for work assessment are NOT so clear cut. When speaking to ESA/UC advisors on the phone, they sound just as confused!

I am essentially being told that ALL assessments for work capability are cancelled until further notice and that these are not being replaced with paper-based or telephone assessments. they are just cancelled in their entirety. so, this means that if eligible for the support group/LCWRA, you can't even be assessed to receive the extra allowance but have to continue on the standard allowance/LCW allowance until further notice.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

They are saying online that face-to-face assessments are cancelled. For PIP, it clearly states they will use paper/telephone instead but for UC/ESA, it seems to be saying that you just can't be assessed at all?

I am chronically ill and knew my job was ending on 31st March for months before it ended. I knew i would need unemployment and sickness benefits and had been relying on the support group allowance as my health problems are quite severe and i think i would have been assessed there. It now looks like this additional elemnt is completely on hold?

Anyone with any insight, I would be so grateful. I've called the helplines and they seem to think that paper-based and telephone assessments are not being done for UC/ESA at all (unless the applicant is terminal).

Many thanks for any help! :)

I'm afraid the situation is confusing and the DWP are not trying to clarify it.

So the first issue is that face to face assessments were suspended for three months from 17 March so we are now out of this time but there has been no new announcement about what is happening, even if to extend the suspension.

As to UC/ESA specifically, up to last week, no phone assessments had been done, now we are now seeing members report appointments for phone assessments but they appear to be few and far between at the moment.

You can try contacting Maximus for an update, historically doing this would prompt them to offer an appointment, failing that, you can also ask what additional information they would require in order for them to do a Paper Based Review.

Capability for work assessment during covid-19 4 days 22 hours ago #250047

I had a capabilty for work assessment carried out over telephone 2 weeks ago and got decision
sent to UC journal the next morning. This says that I have been put in lcwra category and may be eligible for extra monthly payment / backdated payment which I should be told about by message in journal within 7 days, but I haven't received anything yet. Has anybody else had this and should I be getting in touch with DWP to let them know? Also does anybody have any idea when this might be backdated to?

I assume that this is a new claim.

The rules for UC area bit complicated, so your LCWRA award becomes payable in the first pay period 13 weeks after you presented your first Fit Note.

If you think that you have exceeded this timeframe then you should first put a question about it in your UC journal, if that does not elicit a response after a couple of days then call the UC Helpline 0800 328 5644.
