TOPIC: OXYGEN USE AND PIP

OXYGEN USE AND PIP 1 month 1 week ago #243061

hi Gordon
I remember 10 years ago when applying for ESA, that I read in a gov hand book that if walking was done on oxygen then it was not counted as oxygen is a medicine ,or words to that effect .
I have tried looking for it again but cannot find it, and wondered if any activity that can "only" be done on oxygen counted in PIP.

Hi mac

As Gordon stated previously, with any activity, 'If you normally use the oxygen then you should reply on this basis', one way of answering the activity questions, how would you carry out these activities without oxygen?

My mother suffered from emphysema, and for many years she was on oxygen and had to take it everywhere with her. In her flat she she had a very long tube connected to an oxygen making machine, she only used small bottles when travelling in a car or going out in her wheelchair and had a large bottle for emergencies at home in case of a power cut.

do you mean tell them what i would be like if i had to do the activity without out the oxygen then tell them how the oxygen lets me do the activity and describe how i do it with the oxygen on.
or just describe as how i would carry out the activity without the oxygen

hi Gary
looking at your answer again do you also mean, how would you carry out these activities without oxygen? or;
how you would carry out these activities without oxygen?
I'm on a trial of opiates for refractory breathlessness, maybe should leave them out while i'm form filling.
i'm on the same as youre mother had for my emphysema. I started out on just ambulatory oxygen for exercise desaturation then over night for nocternal desaturation just started on ltot, and retain co2 (type 2 respiratory failure).
Itle be like a breath of fresh air when this forms filled in and posted .

Even if you find it, you cannot use the guidance that you mentioned in an earlier post, it is not specific to PIP and more importantly, it pre-dates PIP which means that if it was intended to be considered for, it would be.

The walking you are being asked to do is outside, so is it practical for you to take your Oxygen with you, if not then your ability to walk without it should be considered.

If you can take it out then you could try and argue that your having to use it means that you are not walking to a necessary standard.

You haven't mentioned the distance that you can walk and whether you can do it reliably on the majority of days?
