The next few weeks will be the best chance claimants have to prevent a catastrophic real-terms reduction in benefits rates from next April.  Many Conservative MPs are worried about losing their majorities and a wave of protest about possible benefit cuts may encourage them to force the government to back down.

The prime minister and chancellor have made it clear that they have not yet made a firm decision on whether to uprate benefits in line with inflation next April, in spite of both Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak giving an undertaking to do so.

Instead, the idea is being mooted that benefits should be increased by the same rate as wages have gone up.  This would be around 5.4% instead of the 10% inflation figure.

There has been an outpouring of protest and concern from other political parties and from charities such as the Joseph Rowntree Trust (JRT) and Rethink Mental Illness about what would effectively be a cut in benefits rates at a time of great hardship.

JRT has pointed out that the government has cut the real value of benefits in 7 of the last 10 years.

Uprating by only 5.4% would mean that benefits are worth around 15% below the April 2016 level, when the benefits freeze began to bite.  This amounts to £470 a year less for a single adult.

JRT say that if the 5.4% rise goes ahead the poorest will see their income fall by £214 a year, whilst the richest would gain more than £5,000.

Katie Schmuecker, Principal Policy Adviser for JRF said:

“Reneging on the promise to raise benefits in line with inflation as usual would be a hostile and harmful act of historic proportions. It is morally indefensible for a government who have chosen to target tax cuts at the richest, to target spending cuts at those on the lowest incomes who are not responsible for this crisis.

“This will terrify millions who have been enduring a cost of living emergency for months. They are facing a harsh winter – struggling to feed their families, cook hot food and heat their homes.”

Even a number of high profile Conservative politicians have attacked the idea of not fully uprating benefits, including Michael Gove, Esther McVey, Iain Duncan Smith and Penny Mordaunt.

Originally we would have had to wait until 23 November to be told what the government intends to do.  But pressure after the U-turn on cutting the 45p rate of tax means that Kwarteng will now set out his plans by the end of October.

Once the decision has been announced it will take vastly more effort to get it changed.

So, the time to write to your MP and give your opinion is right now.  And, for once, it will be particularly valuable to write to your MP to ask them to support a benefits increase if they are a Conservative.  Because this may be the one time when, looking at an increased chance of losing their job if they don’t, they may just decide to speak up in public for claimants.

You can find your MP here

If you have contacts with a charity or disability organisation that has not yet spoken out against the cuts, it would definitely be worth contacting them and asking for their support.

If you do take action, please post a comment below and let us know what response you get.

I hardly slept last night I felt so upset and angry at all of this.  Not easy today because I have a heart condition made worse by lack of sleep.  I understand that these are difficult economic times but surely there is a better way of dealing with this.

@CaroA Try to remember that this is pre election bluster. If, and only if, it ever comes in, it will not be instant. There will be many challenges to many parts, all taking time.

@CaroA Same. Two of my heart conditions make things like this, and lack of sleep exacerbate them. Not to mention my MH. And my other conditions.
      It's beyond comprehension
how they think any of this helps us in even one way.
There are going to be any awful lot of people feeling lost.
I could barely cope with how things are now.
I'm not fit or ready for a fight.
None of us are. We are being singled out and picked on because we are powerless.
I've said it all along, fix the NHS ,help people who need procedures and maybe, just maybe they will return to work and stop blaming the sick and disabled for not getting the treatments they need.
You'd have to be utterly thick or pretend to be to not see the reasons why so many are out of work, also not every job could cope with those of us who have multiple conditions, nor do they want us.
This is not about shying away from work, dodging or pretending and they know it.
Absolutely fed up to my back teeth with the entire system. No compassion ,no empathy just hatred and loathing of us.

We lost thousands due to movement of pension age.
I then got a terminal illness when i did retire, and then I needed help financially, I used any savings I did have during covid, I was not entitled to any help during it.
I never used any benefit systems during my working life.
This government will kill us all, just like they did in covid, by sending untested people to homes, this saved them money, nursing home costs, plus the pension stops when you die.
It is always the well off making the rules.
How the hell will a catalogue help me breath better.
Do we need medication or food? (Both you idiots) this just shows how they think, they will never, ever be in our situation, they will have a huge pension, and be able to afford food and medication.
I have paid my taxes, allow me to live a few years, without trying to get more out of me, I have nothing left to give.
Giving help through the NHS is useless, they have taken every single penny out of it.
Councils going bankrupt, so no help there.
    They are all the same.
    Because THEY are ok.

@Jlh Without Labour clarifying their position on these changes we don't know if they will be any better than the Tories.

Will this make it much more difficult to get into the LCWRA Universal credit group?

I believe they said recently, only those eligible for PIP daily living component would be eligible for this Universal credit group.

@Anon Yes, I'd like to know where that leads, too.
Hence the proposed move to UC from Esa and HB. Another ploy to deny us benefits no doubt.

I took part in the early hours of the morning just hours after it was released. I

It took perhaps an hour and a half, but I’m glad I did it. Whoever wins the next GE needs to know that we will NOT back down and let them dismantle our livelihoods!

If you can - Please go through it. Good luck - it really shows what they think of us…

If no personal or identifying information is required, how will the DWP be able to trust the responses to the questions?

Anyone could respond. Including people with a personal grudge against those on benefits, which isn't difficult to imagine given the amount of anti-benefit propaganda we've heard coming from government in recent months and years.

It's like saying would you rather drown or be throttled.    I'm over pension age and just had a review I have been downgraded on both living and mobility even though I am worse than ever.

Goodness, there were some poorly thought-through ideas in that questionnaire. I have just spent over two hours completing it. Sadly I fear my considered and lengthy responses will have no impact.

Among other medical issues, I have been diagnosed with early onset vascular dementia ,
I’m tired of all this jumping through hoops
We always get a political kicking when the Tories are looking under the political  sofa.
They can’t Deny us euthanasia yet , beat us with the lock them in there homes. We don’t want to see them or pay them a benefit !
Thousands of us like me would happily be put to sleep as like many others I know what my end with be like my dad had it, it’s horrid !
Sorry but I feel strongly that the disabled are made to feel a burden on society and family !

I read through the questionnaire and decided NOT to complete it, but to send an email instead. I would encourage anyone who finds the questionnaire too daunting to face, to send an email instead. This is NOT a multi choice issue and to reduce it to a box ticking exercise is demeaning. With an email you can keep going back to it, refine and expand your comments, until you are happy with it, then press SEND.

Hopefully this will never happen but how do they expect to deal with people who already have awards for up to 10 years? I assume they would need to phase out PIP and devise yet another new benefit like they did DLA to PIP. My OH had a lifetime DLA award but now 'stumbles' through reassessments expecting the worst as it's all so random.

I filled in the questionaire to the best of my ability.  I have dylexia and the black text on the white screen is not easy for me to read any length of time. The text kept doing little dances on my screen.
I do have a clear coloured purple perspex screen to put in front of my computer screen, by disability support team at university which I was given years ago when I completed a fine art degree, it's supposed to help me, but could not find it.  Going to have a well earned nap now.
    Exhausted!

My mother has always said "people give you vouchers because they don't know you well enough to know what you'd like, or they just can't be bothered to find out." The BEST voucher is cash: acceptable (almost) everywhere.

This is not going to happen with the Tories because he have not call a general election but you will see what the other party will do and if labour get in this will not happen and the prime minister is very nervous he is do everything and everything to stay in power
