The DWP will have cleared most of the work capability assessment (WCA) reassessment backlog for claimants whose condition has deteriorated in the next six months, disability minister Stephen Timms told MPs in answer to a written question.

Last month we reported that there was a backlog of 110,000 WCA reassessments and little sign of the DWP reducing that figure, because they were focusing on assessments for new claimants rather than existing ones.

However, in his latest written parliamentary answer, Timms says that 35,000 of the reassessments are for claimants who have reported a change in their circumstances, usually a deterioration in their condition, up to May 2025.  These are claimants who may be entitled to a higher rate of benefit.

The DWP are now working with the private sector suppliers (Maximus, Capita, Serco and Ingeus) to increase the number of assessors available. 6,000 of the deterioration reassessments are now being worked on, with most of the 35,000 to be dealt with over the next six months.

In a separate response to a Freedom of Information request, the DWP have confirmed that claimants with LCW who report a deterioration in their health before 6 April 2026 will – if they meet the criteria - receive the current LCWRA rate, rather than the almost halved rate that is to be introduced for new claims from that date.

On A Different note Why is noone highlighting the fact that the DWP is pushing ahead with welfare cuts especially contribution benefits  ESA of which I am dependent on. I will lose £7000 a year will push me into destitution. ?. The DWP may have abandoned the White Paper. But all disabled people like myself unfit to work will be pushed into poverty. The DWP is planning to implement different reforms through either primary or secondary legislation. Time to Lobby your Labour MP . I no longer wish to live to an old age if all disabled people irrespective of their age or position in society can live in dignity and treated with respect and have to live in poverty .

@Bronc Contributions based ESA /New Style ESA support group is non time limited. Anyone who became disabled enough to qualify and had enough NI contributions is on it. As is anyone passported from Contributions based (or disabled from a young age) IB or non contribution based (80%+ disabled or disabled from a young age) Severe Disability Allowance when IB and SDA were abolished.

Contributions based benefits take precedence over income based benefits. You cannot choose to not claim the contributions based benefit and instead just get the income based. You get the contributions based benefit. If the income based benefit is higher and you pass the means testing then you get a income based top up, your income based minus your contributions based.

@Anon Can't understand why people would be on contribution based Esa shouldn't we all have been on Income related.

So the government does not expect to clear the WCA reassessments backlog within 6 months. All the overdue reassessments.

The DWP does expect to clear the backlog of reassessment requested by claimants due to their health condition getting worse.

@adrian Can I ask where you read it will take until 2028 to clear all the backlog? Obviously there is a massive backlog and it will take a lot of time just wondering if you read this somewhere from official sources?

@John The title was pretty scary, it made it sound like all of us who are due a reassessment will be reassessed within 6 months. I'm absolutely dreading my reassessment if I ever get one, I'm so worried about being classed as fit for work or put into LCW, even if I get it overturned at the tribunal it's a lot of stress and anxiety to go through all of that and will make my depression and suicidal thoughts worse.

Fraud, Error and Recovery Bill update -
The bill now returns to the House of Commons for consideration of Lords amendments on Wednesday 5 November.

I am wondering if it is worth another targeted MP email push to support the amendments – which seem to go some way to addressing our privacy concerns.

Benefits and Work – any thoughts? With thanks.

In other new the government response to the pathways to work consultation is out, it's actually quite funny. Seems everyone did as I did and  used their response to rant about how awful the whole thing was. It's definitely one to have a gander at https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/pathways-to-work-reforming-benefits-and-support-to-get-britain-working-green-paper/outcome/government-response-to-the-pathways-to-work-consultation
