Massive increase in PIP appeals as backlog soars

There has been a massive increase in the number of PIP appeals being lodged and a big rise in the backlog waiting to be heard as a result, according to the latest statistics from HMCTS.

Compared to the April to June quarter last year, social security appeal numbers have increased by 81% to a total of 35,000 and the number of outstanding cases has risen by 61% to 59,000.

PIP appeals have risen by 111% and universal credit by 76%.

PIP appeals now make up 71% of the appeal numbers with UC making up a further 14%.

The number of cases completed fell by 16%, mostly due to a fall of 21% in the number of PIP cases completed.

Success rates for appeals have mostly stayed steady, with victories for claimants running at

PIP 71%

DLA 66%

ESA 58%

However, UC success rates have risen by 9% to 55%.

Cases are currently taking an average of 25 weeks to be completed, 14 weeks less than for the same period last year.

I had 3 PiP appeals. Any information that I would of scored points on was overlooked. Also extra evidence I sent in went missing. But this happened on all of the 3 claims. I personally lost all faith in DWP giving you a fair assessment. In fact I would go as far to say thousands of benefit claiments were actually conned out of the benefits with a fraudulent accessement. I will never trust DWP every again.

Well CAB only have 1 person who deals with appeals and ruined mines last year so following more surgery, death of my spouse, another surgery then job loss I put in new claim myself and got awarded higher rate for daily living till 2025 but wrote mandatory recon for no award for mobility esp as the statement was nonsense e.g. no evidence of anxiety......I provided a ton of evidence but the letter from my CPN said it all amd report said I wasn't diagnosed or on medication so they clearly had to accept that bit came back with much more ridiculous reasons so onto appeal.......

I'm being supported by union rep from job I lost due to health and even he was shocked at response from an recon, I've since submitted even more supporting evidence for their new crazy reasons and was to hear by 03 Sep. I enquired about this last week and was told as if I'd asked a stupid question and should have known that they have 21 days after that date to respond so its now due by 24 Sep.

If no response they will assign a case worker to my appeal amd reassured me thos is the process, not just my appeal.

So either I hear this week or I will have to chase this case work down. I want to know though since they've taken so long, the new adult disability payment has now rolled out to all of Scotland so I want it passed to them who do not assess and put you through this hell.

I know they don't want to pay backdated money I'm entitled to but I can prove my case in many ways in law so it will go to upper tribunal if need be and cost them court costs so I wish they would get on with it.

I shall update if I don't die waiting. Id also like to thank you as I bought the PIP modules and I'm now at least half way there and will not give up. For me PIP is my best option as I want to return to work when fit but if I try and can't cope I'd need to go through thos year long nightmare again so PIP would cover bills and the security to study and recover and not be affected when I try to work so no pressure which they should really think how that ages sense as without that I could end up too unwell to even try get off benefits.

I even wrote about the IAS getting things wrong, actual lie denying my rights so make me suffer so badly. There's weeks at a time I don't get out of bed and for the sake of an extra few hundred pounds a month this could all be prevented and give me hope for the future.

When your condition doesn't get better over the years except worse even if you have passed your assessment in those years they will think your condition is much improved just by looking at you. That's when they put the UN correct scores on there computer and notes that are not said by the person at assessment. They make up things as it's all about percentages for them to make money out of this. Then when it goes to appeals as with further evidence the people win tho they don't need this extra evidence as it's there to see in first place. They believe in miracles when they see you struggle yet they say different.

Isn't it a wonder why so many back logs and appeals etc, all because mainly due to dwp paying hundreds of millions of pounds of tax payers monies, for 3rd party bent dodgy corrupted assessor organizations, and assessors.

  @MrFibro I think it is the increase in the amount of applications because of the end of the Pandemic and lockdown and the cost of living problems. People are applying and not realising what is required for a successful claim for PIP. Most of the claims that go to appeal are claims where the claimant has either filled there PIP2 form in badly or they have not understoof the activity or the descriptors so they score no points for the activity they are applying for. It would be a better idea before the claimant started the PIP claim to inform them on what is required, what the activities are and the meaning of the descriptors because alot of claimants focus on there disability or mental health problem and not on how there disability or mental health problem affects them for the majority of days according to the descriptors.

I have recently received LWCRA following telephone assessment by a doctor. 2hr telephone call. Do l contact PIP to advise them of this?

  @Jason Lee I do not think that assesments will ever be stopped and the hope of Labour making things better is a little far off also. On the last change in the application for ESA The Labour Party made it harder to claim for ESA Mobility after a review and restructuring of the application process by Yvette Cooper. It's the points system on the computer that's all wrong that they have when doing the assessment. No consideration of previous points that you had and evidence. It's harder to get new evidence if you have a chronic condition a health condition or disease that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting in its effects or a disease that comes with time. The term chronic is often applied when the course of the disease lasts for more than three months. They don't believe in that and will always give you points below than previous assessment. They want you work is there goal no matter what when the clear evidence that you can't.

  @Colin I can't tell you how much of a relief it is to speak with people on here who know how awful this stupid system is. No wonder there's been deaths as a result of these sub-human practices.
