Eligible claimants in Wales who have not already done so have until 28 February to apply for a £200 payment towards their energy bills the Welsh government announced yesterday, as it doubled its winter fuel support scheme payments.

Many claimants of means-tested benefits in Wales have already been contacted by their local authority and invited to apply for a £100 payment.

But the payment has now increased to £200. If you have already received the £100 payment under the scheme you don’t need to do anything, you will receive a further £100 in the coming weeks.

If you haven’t yet applied you can check your local authority’s website for more details about the scheme and information on how to apply.

The Swansea local authority’s web page on the scheme, for example, explains that you cannot claim if you get your fuel from an off grid source such as oil, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or coal, though there is an emergency fund for off grid fuel costs.

The page also lists claimants of the following benefits as being eligible:

  • Income Support, or
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance, or
  • Income Related Employment & Support Allowance, or
  • Universal Credit, or
  • Working Tax Credits

Find out more from your local authority’s website and remember the deadline for applying is 28 February.

Basically no help for people on Contribution based benefits whatsoever.... we still have the same needs and bills though... people on Benefits will never see the Council Tax rebate Sunak has given as they don't actually PAY Council Tax so basically it's another Tory ghost allowance. Thanks Boris!!!

But let's make one thing very clear - its only if you are the name on the bill. I'm on PIP and UC and live with my Mum who's on PIP and state pension. The bills are in her name so we're not eligible and before anyone says just swap it, firstly why shouldn't she be eligible anyway and secondly, the council did say when we queried it that it would be viewed as suspicious and rejected if we did it now after the scheme was announced.
