Carers allowance or not? was created by sugaplum
I am in receipt of DLA high mob and middle rate care (indefinite). Also ESA CB support group. My hubby is thinking of claiming for carers allowance now that he is able to. He has taken early retirement to look after me and does not claim for anything and never has. I am concerned that my benefits may be looked at again because of it. I don't want to be pushed towards PIP until I really have to. Is it worth claiming or would it just open up a can of worms do you think? Thanks for advice.

Hi saac,

Carers Allowance (CA) is administered by The Carer's Allowance Unit :

www.gov.uk/carers-allowance-unit

Which is a different department to the one that deals with DLA/PIP.

If you are in receipt of MR or HR Care DLA and your husband qualifies for CA :

www.gov.uk/carers-allowance/eligibility

There should not be a problem.

Not sure if my experience helps sickasachip, but briefly:

I also received DLA high rate mobility, middle rate care. My husband retired early to care for me. 2 years after he retired I was going through an appeal for Esa WRAG to support group. The WRAG benefits agency worker suggested that my appeal would be successful, and that hubby was entitled to carers allowance. Also that it could be backdated. I think for 3 months. We applied, she was correct. No problem in getting carers allowance.

Shame that when sick and disabled people are being denied benefits nobody points out that carer allowance often goes unclaimed. Though reassuring that not all DWP staff are against us.

Good luck.
