how will benefits be affected? was created by pack37
Hi there. I am in receipt of ESA support group on mental health grounds. Also DLA higher rate care and lower rate mobility, both for mental health issues. My question is, if I continue to allow my adult son, who has had a breakdown, is currently homeless and has become an alcoholic (he is not currently claiming anything and has no money), to stay with me in my home (rented social housing), how will that affect my benefits? Thanks.

Your DLA will not be effected.

Your ESA may be if you are receiving the Severe Disability Premium as this is only payable if you are living alone.

If you are receiving Housing Benefit then this may be effected, also your Council Tax.

I would recommend your getting face to face advice from a trained advisor, they will be able to calculate your potential payments before you proceed, do an internet search for "welfare advice" with your postcode, town, or county.

I believe there will not be a 'non dependant deduction' to your council tax rebate as you are in receipt of DLA.

Thank you both for the advice. Another question I have is, if my son makes a claim for ESA, while he is staying with me, and is successful, how would that affect my benefits?

It shouldn't as you should be classed as non-dependant adults, therefore your two claims will be in your own names only.
