Thanks so much again Gordon, I understand now. I know I will not qualify for IR as I have an occupational pension.
I am terrified of coming off ESA as I know what will happen if my health deteriorates again as it is very likely to do but I cannot face spending the next 12 years (when I become eligible for my state pension) feeling as harassed, stigmatised and victimised for having health problems as I have for the last few years. I am aware it's a decision i may very well regret but I think I have to try if I am offered the job. Hope I don't live to regret it.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

I do urge you to have a look at Permitted Work, don't treat it as "still" being on ESA but as a sensible intermediate stage to moving successfully back into work.

Hi fl,
If you have really thought this through, I am very pleased for you and hope that things work out well !!
Remember, if things don't work out, you still have the ESA 12 Week Linking Rule where you can make a rapid reclaim if no more than 12 weeks have passed since you closed your claim.
You could leave it until Monday to ring them :
THE ESA PHONE NUMBER DWP : 0345 608 8545 Press Option 3 for ESA.
However, I strongly advise that you confirm that you are closing your ESA Claim formally in writing, that way you have a paper trail.
You could do that now, and post it this week. (Keep a copy)
Post it to the address of The Benefits Office/Centre on your most recent ESA letter :
Sending Documents to the DWP.
There should not be a problem with any overpayments, as ESA is paid fortnightly in arrears.
