Hi Francis,

So kind of you to write a reply to my call for help. I will write back soon. I understand very well how long it takes to manage therapy.

Best wishes and Take care :-)

Please can you just clarify something for me, I know you have given me some more advice since the paragraph below taken from your first response to me but I just need to clarification on this point:

You wrote;

Secondly you need to show that you need supervision, prompting or assistance throughout the 14 hours. You don not say what the nature of the treatment is, but that should not matter.

I got this paragraph below From Page 20. Personal independence payment (PIP) claims on physical health, mental health and learning difficulties grounds. Version 17th July 2014.

Prompting is support provided by another person by reminding or encouraging a claimant to undertake or complete a task or explaining it to them but not physically helping them. To apply this only needs to be required for part of the activity.

please can you just confirm for me is this correct or has maybe case law moved on!(not sure if this is clear but I hope you get my drift, Im not a lawyer) , I understand PIP is quite new so things change.

Also this point from page 19 Personal independence payment (PIP) claims on physical health, mental health and learning difficulties grounds. Version 17th July 2014

In relation to supervision, prompting or assistance DWP explains that: the assessment will take into account whether individuals have an underlying need for support from another person, regardless of whether they have access to this, so if it would be reasonable for you to have support even if you don’t actually get it , then you should be scored on the basis that you need it.

Many thanks for your support, I really do suffer terribly, I often say I have half a life due to the time it takes to manage my condition. It really feels so.

The guide has the latest information available.

Breeze, TY for your kind words.

When the PIP descriptors 1st came out, my only thought was how to class Complete Emollient Therapy etc. As some may take this as treatment. I set out to discover differences between treatment and therapy. After discussions with many in the dermatology field, including National Eczema Society amongst others, all of whom had similar opinions, that CET, steroid therapy and other prescribed items, are indeed Therapy, in the medical term.

As I hoped I explained, the 14 hours and the assistance required should not be too difficult for me to confirm. I have unarguable documentation from Cons Derm prescribing 'drug therapy' as well as letter confirming discussions surrounded my CET.

I know myself that the psychological factors (there are papers that discuss psychodermatology and psychosocial care) can weigh heavily
and add to my depression, resulting in my partner (even before being able to deal with 'assistance') having to effectively tell me to 'at least moisturise face, neck, upper limbs trunk and back and we'll spend additional time on below waist in the morning', or variables of this scenario. Believe me, there are some mornings that are so 'dark', and due to the state of my skin and thoughts, I really do wish I could simply end it all. Again, my partner knowing me, a damned sight better than I know myself, is able to 'sense' my moods, and of course
knows how to handle me in these situations. Won't list all chronic illnesses/disabilities, but this is certainly the most time consuming, physically and mentally draining, of the lot. Not necessarily the most painful, but certainly as incapacitating and debilitating as other problems I suffer, especially at those worst of times when eczema is infected that can take 6-8 weeks from which to fully recover.

Through 1 particularly bad spell, I was prescribed Flucloxacillin 500mg for first 2 weeks, followed by 6 weeks at lower does of 250mg. Don't know if you aware or ever looked at Pompholyx Eczema which affects hands and feet, the palms and soles in particular, but this can result in skin on palms and soles, being so dry and so thick, not just lichenified, that this layer literally has to be peeled and sanded off, in order for any steroids, creams and soap substitutes to get through and be effective!

I think have overmentioned some of my states, but hope you are able to get your head around this specific descriptor.

Take care.

I know this is an old thread but I am having the same problem I have spent 2 days trying to find out what these terms mean then came across this.
on the top of every page of the assessment summary under each activity, it says the claimant did not report any significant functional problems with this activity. after 2 years this is still a relevant post

shella

Forgive me but I am unsure what your question is.

The legal definition for therapy was updated by the DWP in March 2017 and by implication the one for medication as well. The current PIP Claim guide has the updated definitions.
