I am currently in the assessment phase of my ESA claim and my medical assessment is soon. I have been attending WFIs since last December and after the third WFI agreed to undertake some work experience resulting in my personal adviser suspending further WFIs. After completing the work experience my personal adviser has contacted me again to attend another WFI (which will be the 4th WFI). However, I have noticed in the bottom left of the letter it says "FI ESA Voluntary 01/13". Does this mean that the WFI I have been asked to attend is voluntary and I do not need to go?

Only your JC+ advisor can tell you whether the appointment is mandatory or not.
