PIP - Balance Problems - Moving around was created by ESA Headache
I am trying to complete my PIP claim pack re Moving around and need help please
In the distance boxes I am unsure which one to tick due to the fact that I can walk, put one foot in front of the other, but it is my balance with is my major problems, hence why I am applying for PIP. to me it seems like a bit of a 'trick' question for me to complete. Although I can walk because of my major balance problems I veer from side to side when walking so I tend to walk along walls etc as then I only have 1 side to wobble on. Plus balance cause many many other problems when moving around for me
Any ideas would be helpful please

Hi ESA H,
This is one of the problems that arises when we try to make people fit into little boxes! If you do not feel that the tick-box options accurately portray your limitations then you should leave them blank and fully explain your problems in the text boxes (or additional pages).

That is one of my problems. Damage to my Cerebellum, due to stroke. I stated I could walk no more than 20 metres without falling. I received enhanced rate mobility.

Hi,
I have just had an assessment for my balance condition. Time will tell the outcome!
I ticked the "it varies" box. I made it clear on the form and in the assessment that I can walk. I explained that the more I do (as in time as well as distance) then my symptoms increase. Also I explained how walking conditions can impact on my function. For example, busy shopping areas/supermarkets etc and I don't last long at all!
You have to illustrate how having a balance problem means you need help. Do you need lifts, a taxi/public transport instead of walking. What help have you needed since developing the condition, what can you not do that you used to do before.
Most importantly, I gave evidence and examples of how mobilising affects me...not only during the activity but afterwards and even the next day. Evidence included physio report/ENT specialists testing/occupational health and the adjustments made to enable me to continue working.
I didn't feel during the assessment that I had to "prove" I had a problem due to the evidence....more that I had to explain how it affected me over a period of time. The focus was not so much on what distance I could do........it was more about reliability!
