ESA & LODGER was created by susanalicebarry
Hi guys
Am I right in thinking that if I take in a Lodger it will affect my ESA. Firstly would they take the amount he pays into consideration and reduce my money?
Secondly I know anything over £20 will affect my Housing Benefit so will I lose out both ways?
I am in the assessment group at the moment (Income related).
Also am I entitled to free prescriptions and other health benefits, I have telephoned ESA about this and they say I am entitled to free health benefits and prescriptions but I am not sure I trust them in this matter.
Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

If you are receiving Income Related ESA then any income you receive from any source will affect your ESA and needs to be declared to the DWP, if your income exceeds the amount you are receiving on the Assessment rate then payments will cease although you will continue to have an underlying entitlement to ESA(IR) and can still proceed to assessment.
If you are entitled to ESA(IR) then you are also entitled to free prescriptions and dental care.
If you currently live alone then having a lodger move in may also affect your council tax if you are claiming single occupancy.

Hi
Thank you and thought so, ESA were trying to tell me that a Lodger would not have any effects on my ESA, they were clearly misleading me and luckily I did not fall into their trap. I hate this system, all they do is take money off you. I do have a non dependent living with me and they know this and are going mad because I only charge £14 a week for gas and electric. Housing Benefit classes him as a non dependent but as I am in receipt of DLA both high rates and I get ESA it does not inpact on my housing or council tax benefit. I rang them to make sure of this.
Thanks again.
