Carers Allowance info incorrect? was created by Peeved
I look after my mother for 60 hours a week who suffers dementia. I read the info supplied on the site with regard to claiming Carers allowance, especially with regard to income. The site clearly states that

According to the .gov.uk website, you need to “earn less than £102 a week (after taxes, care costs while you’re at work and 50% of what you pay into your pension)"

There should be an additional note which states that if you have any other income, even if it is not earned, then this income will be treated by Carers allowance and money earned whlst working even if you are not. I have been informed that as I have a private pension paid to me which is greater than the £102/week limit, that I cannot claim the benefit as I am 'working and earning more than the prescribed amount' In effect I am looking after my mother for free, surely this is not morally right?

Hi P,

Sorry to hear this !

It is actually £110/Week now.

If you feel that any of the information on the : CA Gov.UK Site is misleading, you should contact them.

See also : Carers UK CA information.

Someone else may be able to claim CA for providing Care for Mum.

Carers have been getting "short changed" for years, especially carers who are also related to the recipient of the care.

I was under the impression that private pension income was not taken into account with carers allowance although both together would probably become taxable. Carers UK gives out the same info as .govUK.

On the DWP GOV notes for Carers claim pack it states "money you get from private or occupational pensions is not counted as earnings"

Can someone clarify the situation please.

I've had another look and the deductions only apply if you are receiving the Adult Dependant Addition, this is no longer available for new claims of CA. Sorry for any confusion.
