Autism was created by Barney Rubble
I am an Appointee for my son (age 37) who has a number of medical problems including Asperger's Syndrome and Dyspraxia. He receives DLA Lower Rate Mobility and Middle Rate Care. The DWP have not so far contacted me about transferring from DLA to PIP but I would like to be as well prepared as I can be when the application for PIP is received.

I have read the Benefits and Work guides and other information on PIP and have used the ESA guides in the past for my son to be successfully placed in the ESA Support Group.

I would like to hear from people who have made applications for PIP who have Aspergers Syndrome or other forms of Autism to help me with the completion of the PIP Forms.

Thanks,

Barney

Hi Barney,

The roll out of PIP continues and, by the end of the year, we would expect anyone* due for reassessment of DLA to be 'invited' to apply for PIP. In addition, the migration of people with indefinite DLA awards will start from October of this year and the process is expected to take several years (or even longer).

Unlike ESA, there will not be a PDF version of the PIP form. In fact, each form will be marked with a unique bar-code so it is vital that the claimant returns the one they were sent.

As you know, it is not the specific condition that entitles someone to PIP, it is the effect that condition has on their care and mobility needs. 2 people with the same condition could have very different needs. Nevertheless, I hope members who have been through the process for similar reasons will be able to offer you some information and encouragement.

*within the prescribed age range
