Carers allowance was created by scratchgolfer
Hello Mods

Quick question, bit of advice needed.

My brother is undergoing treatment for liver cancer and is claiming PIP, can his wife who is in the ESA support group, entitled to claim carers allowance for looking after him.

As she is also close to retirement age can she still claim ESA once she has reached the government retiring age.

She has tried to contact the local cab, but after spending over £5.00 on a phone call and was still 25th in line to be answered, she had to hang up,

Any advice would be of great assistance to them.

Many thanks

Providing that your brother is receiving a PIP Daily Living allowance then his wife can in principle make a claim for Carers Allowance.

She will need to show that she can provide the 35 hours of care a week needed and that her doing so will not be in contradiction to her stated limitations on her last ESA50.

Whether she will receive any payment will be dependant on her receiving Income Related ESA (in whole or in part) now and Pension Credit when she retires.

CA is classed as an overlapping benefit with ESA and the State Pension, so will not actually result in any net increase in payments, however, if ESA(IR) or Pension Credit is in payment then she will receive the Carers Premium/Addition on top of any existing ESA(IR) or PC.

I hope that is clear but if not reply to this post and I will try to explain in more detail.
