At my recent pip assesment,I was asked if I used social media and did I spend time texting during the day. I am curious as to the significance of these questions.Incidently my reply was that I didn't partake in this activity.

Welcome to the forum.

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

The assessors attempt to draw conclusions on the claimants abilities by asking obtuse questions, I have seen someone post on another forum that there ability to text and use social media apps indicated that they were able to socialise, up to now I've doubted the account because it so clearly fails to meet the legal test, but I guess I was wrong!

The ability to text etc might not indicate an ability to socialise but it does suggest things about concentration, understanding and manual dexterity for instance.

You can point out that some us do not react to Facebook (or B&W!) by typing in straight away. We answer only when we can, we type out what we have to say - taking as much time as is needed - and then leave it to be checked to see if it makes sense.

The computer means that you can't tell how long it took someone to produce something that is clear-ish, spellchecked to within an inch of its life and written on a good day - or perhaps at considerable energy cost on a bad day.

Many things that I have typed should perhaps have "<sat with eyes closed for 5 mins>" in the middle of sentences, if they are going to be used as evidence of my capabilities.

Then there are all those posts which get abandoned because I can't finish them or because I forgot to press "Send".

As evidence of concentration and understanding, posts here and elsewhere do not show that those qualities are present reliably, consistently or at acceptable time and energy cost in the workplace.

Texting, OTOH, I will grant as evidence of manual dexterity - unless the typo rate is measured. Me, I don't text very often for just that reason.

We're trying to do some work to make the house more disabled friendly - it's taking ages because every time I have to make a decision, they may have to wait days or weeks or even (as recently) months. Concentration and decision making come hard ATM
