Claiming IR ESA when self-employed was created by Alison
Hello :-)

I became self-employed earlier this year, and I am getting working tax credits because I'm just building my small business. Unfortunately, I have now become ill - but fully hope it is only temporary. I have been unable to work on my business at all in the last few months.

Can I still receive income-related ESA and working tax credits for a temporary period?

Also, I was abroad for a couple of years until May 2014, so I definitely won't have paid into the system in the last two years . . . so I would not be a candidate for contribution-based ESA.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

providing your GP is prepared to issue a Fit Note then you can claim ESA, we don't deal with Tax Credits but I believe there is a 26 week run on if you are claiming ESA.

If you have not paid NI Contributions in the Tax Years 2012-13 and 2013-14 then I would not expect you to qualify for Contribution Based ESA. Income Related ESA is dependant on your household income, your savings and assets, and any hours that your partner works. See

Asset rule for ESA(IR)

24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)
